Southampton suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Bundesliga outfit Augsburg in their latest pre-season friendly at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
Saints should have come into Mauricio Pellegrino’s first home match in charge in high spirits following a 3-0 success against Saint-Etienne in France at the weekend, added to the fact that their German opponents only narrowly avoided finishing in the bottom three in the Bundesliga last term.
However, two first-half goals from Michael Gregoritsch saw them trail 2-0 at the break but if Pellegrino demanded to see a response after the interval, he was severely disappointed as further goals from Ja-Cheol Koo and Raphael Framberger wrapped up a comfortable victory for the visitors.
Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on the result via social media and they were understandably unhappy with some describing the performance as “unacceptable” and “embarrassing”.
The south coast outfit have only signed Poland Under-21 international Jan Bednarek this summer and some other fans want to see the board show some ambition and spend some money after such a disappointing display.
