City are said to be keen on signing Marmoush in the January transfer window after a difficult couple of months during which they have slipped to sixth in the Premier League table. The Egyptian is still an Eintracht Frankfurt player for now and was on target after been named in their side to take on St Pauli on Saturday – but the club's head coach Markus Krosche admitted before the game that talks have taken place with an interested club.

Marmoush is reportedly keen on the move this month but Eintracht will take some convincing to sell as they resume their domestic season sitting third in the Bundesliga. Pep Guardiola is desperate for reinforcements and will view the Egyptian as a player who can play anywhere across the frontline – but City may need to part with €80 million (£67m/$82m) to sign him now.

Asked before the game about the stories, Krosche said: "One club has made contact. A club has expressed its interest. We hope that he stays."

City sold Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid in the summer and may see the versatile Marmoush as his eventual replacement. The Egyptian is joint-top of the Bundesliga goal contributions chart, alongside Harry Kane, and his current team will fancy their chances of continuing to compete at the top of the league should they keep him this month.
