West Ham United were one of the busiest Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window, but in these early stages, the bulk buy has not given them much joy.
Manuel Pellegrini has overseen defeat in all three of the club’s Premier League fixtures so far this season.
The team were beaten 4-0 by Liverpool and then lost 2-1 to Bournemouth and 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.
Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena were recruited in the summer to bolster the defence, but there are still issues at the back.
James Collins had been at the heart of West Ham’s defence for many years, but the club opted not to offer the 35-year-old a new contract when his previous one expired at the end of last season.
According to club insider ExWHUemployee, the defender is still connected with the club and there could potentially be a way back.

In a column for The West Ham Way, the club source revealed that Collins has been training with the East London outfit for the past two weeks and would like to stay.
The piece suggests that the door is open ajar, but it is unlikely that the experienced centre-back will be handed fresh terms.
ExWHUemployee added that Collins has received an offer from Brighton, which he is considering.
Given that the defender is keen to stay and the Hammers have had some defensive issues already this season, should he be handed another chance?
