Some times when it comes to football you hear a name and it seems like a strange blast from the Rangers past that you just cannot quite place, and German legend (and chess fan, like it matters?) Felix Magath certainly ticks that particular box.
I am not quite sure why, maybe it was a slow news day, but the 70 year old former West German international, and short term Fulham manager, did a decent interview with the Scottish Sun this week revealing, as plenty of speculation suggested many years ago, that he did in fact once interview to be our gaffer, but then somewhat bizarrely when the job offer did not work out for him, instead he just decided to keep the shares he had already purchased in the club. The top 50 UK online casinos would not have seen a man such as himself investing in us, somewhat randomly, all those years ago.
For those with long memories, we are going back around about nine years ago, and it seems the former European Cup winner and World Cup runner up, ended up developing a strange devotion with all things Ibrox, and it was at that point he physically and financially invested in us, even if a few years later though, he was unsuccessful in his bid to become our manager.

“I was so impressed with Rangers and happy with Scottish football that I decided to buy shares in the club in 2014. It’s a great club, a big club, and they have so much power in football — they have fans all over the world. It’s a renowned football club throughout the world. For me, it was a no-risk decision to buy Rangers shares. I will not say how many I have, but I will keep them. I wanted to help support the club. Rangers has enjoyed success in Europe over recent years. They have beaten some big German clubs.”
The actual job offer seems to have come around about five years ago, and just before we appointed former Liverpool and England international skipper Steven Gerrard. Obviously our board were aware of his existing shareholding, so apparently we reached out to him and his representatives over what sounds like a managerial cum investment proposal, and it did include secret face to face talks.
Now obviously, a three time German Manager of the Year being appointed would have been quite a coup for us back then, especially given his playing career successes and his multiple Bundesliga title wins with Bayern Munich and then Wolfsburg in 2009 (which many consider a far greater achievement given Bayern’s stock in their game).
But sadly, as history shows, it was not to be.
“We met in London and we discussed possibilities. It was 2018 and I was interested. But as with any negotiation with a club, things have to be right. Obviously, there are different aspects in British football and, unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”
Despite Magath’s age, he has spent a number of years working with Scottish coach Mark Fotheringham and they remain close friends, and although the former Dundee and Norwich City midfielder is better known for his coaching in Germany, Magath will not rule out potentially moving to the Scottish Premiership if a deal is right in the near future.
