Sunderland have snapped up former Darlington defender Scott Harrison until the end of the season following a successful trial on Wearside.
The 19-year-old will join the club’s U21 development squad under the watchful eye of Kevin Ball. Having made only 10 non-league appearances for Darlington last season, the move is definitely a step up for the young centre back.
The starlet made his debut in a 0-0 draw against Forest Green Rovers in December 2011, before eventually ending up on trial at the Academy of Light this season.
Harrison had worked under coach Craig Liddle, but became a free agent when the Quakers folded at the end of last campaign due to financial problems.
Martin O’Neill is believed to be keen to have young fresh defensive talent on his books, with the side suffering a few injuries in that area this Premier League season already.
Despite it being too soon to expect the player to feature for the first team just yet, Harrison has the rest of this campaign to leave an impression on the Sunderland coaching staff.
U21 Development squad boss Kevin Ball told the Evening Chronicle: “Scott was recommended to us and we gave him an opportunity to come in.
“We see in him a lad giving all the intentions of wanting to work at his game and we feel he warrants a contract until the end of the season, which we were delighted to offer him.”
Ball’s U21 development side currently lie in 5th place in the U21 league standings.
